Evolution of Illuminated Soft Matter

My work addresses the interfaces of the fields of soft matter physics and evolutionary biology. My group is driven by the idea that insight into evolutionary mechanisms will foster insights into physical mechanisms that would be inaccessible from more top-down, analytical approaches. In particular, the way that the structure of light literally shapes animal bodies over evolutionary time is an ongoing fascination of mine.

For my work, I have received the David & Lucile Packard Fellowship in Science & Engineering, the Sloan Fellowship, the NSF-CAREER Award, an NSF-INSPIRE Award, and most recently a Moore Foundation Experimental Physics Initiative award.
